june evelien
Our daughter was born on July 21, 2009 at 9:02am. She weighed in at 7lbs, 4oz and is 20 3/4 inches tall. Most surprising perhaps is the head full of brown hair she is sporting... definitely putting her brother way behind in that arena :)
The name: we love the freshness of the name June. we met in the month of June and married in the month of June. During my childhood, this time of the year signified the start of freedom: of summers to be spent at the pool, exploring the neighborhood creeks, taking bike rides after dinner, catching fireflies in the backyard during the magical hour of dusk, and the smell of clothes dried on the line in the sunshine. And as if that wasn't enough - who doesn't love some June Carter Cash? That's good listening right there.
Her middle name is a reminder of family - it is my grandmother's middle name, and my middle name. The spelling however is different: Evelien (as opposed to Evelyn) is the dutch spelling of the name, and a small way to remind her of my mother's dutch heritage - an influence I value very highly.
So a little girl named June Evelien, who was actually born in July... we hope she doesn't mind too much. Hah.
More pictures on other cameras that we need to download yet, but here is one immediately following her birth with our OB.

the best of summer
I stole this photo from my friend Conner's blog... It was just too perfect of RM enjoying some of the best food summer has to offer - corn on the cob. We were invited to the greatest back porch on earth (at the Cochran's house) for a picnic last weekend while they were in town. RM went native on the cob and just chewed happily for a little while. And fortunately he didn't mind borrowing RJ's pink bib.

song.
we have been singing this for almost two years. i'm still trying to pinpoint the familiar tune we use -- I can't quite put my finger on it though. RM has just started to request - nay, demand - his song before bed. Sometimes standing there grinning at me, sometimes lying on his tummy for me to tickle his back. Last night he awoke at 1am, and i held him for several minutes just rocking and enjoying one of the last nights with my only child before he becomes a big brother soon. When i laid him back down, he softly said, "song. song." How can a momma resist that?
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, way up in the sky
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, you're flying so high
Above all the tree tops, you soar like a bird
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, we won't say a word
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, way up in the air
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, you're without a care
You fly through the sky like an airplane
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, this song is your name
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, what dreams you will dream
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, when you go to sleep.
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, we love you so much
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, you're our favorite son
Red Marshall, Red Marshall, way up in the sky

juuuust jokin' momma.
so, we got a chance to do a "dry run" to the hospital yesterday. that's right folks - i was contracting enough to go, but not enough to stay... on the fourth of july, no less. according to the nurse, my body is most certainly preparing for the big event, but this little baby just decided to psych us out and now will sit tight a little longer.
we'll see what the next week holds. she's not even due for 16 more days after all. :)

slippin and a slidin...
a gift from across the pond...
while my dear parents are galavanting around Europe this summer, we know that thankfully we are not far fromt their thoughts. In fact, "Oma" has been preparing for her next two granddaughters' arrivals this month by finishing their baby blankets on her travels. They sent our daughter's home with Thomas last week, and it is just lovely, as you can see here! I told my mom in an email that we have decided on a name, although we haven't disclosed it fully yet. The initial for her first name is "J" as you can see from her finished baby blanket!
