life changing diagnosis, round two

Well, when RM was diagnosed with food allergies back in October (milk, eggs, peanut, tree nuts) I was a little taken aback, but I thought - okay, lots of people handle this with little kids. We have found dairy-free margarine, rice milk, and other options to make life a little more 'normal' seeming. I've even found easy baking substitutes for eggs like banana or applesauce.

The great irony is that Floyd started having allergic reactions in the last year. Mild at first, but more frequent and noticable. He drank soy milk and his throat started itching and his tongue started swelling. Same thing with almonds. And then last week, at one of our favorite ethnic restaurants, his entire head and face started itching, his eyes and cheeks swelling, he wasn't able to think clearly, and almost fell asleep on the way home. Bizarre. So we decided to go for the test. 61 pin pricks on his back later, here is what we found out. As you can see from the chart above, the reactive scale is 0-4, with 4 being the highest reaction you can have to a food source.

Suffice it to say, I am a little overwhelmed right now, and we have to go get another epi-pen. Just for kicks - go to your pantry and tell me how many boxes/cans you can find that don't contain one of these items. I think I am going to have to become a pioneer woman and make everything from scratch.

Milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, corn, almonds, sesame?

So does this test mean he's no longer to milk since there is no number beside it?

My mom became allergic to eggs when she was in her mid-50s. Imagine spending your whole life loving scrambled eggs, cake, and pasta and then BAM! Gone. It was really hard 10+ years ago when there weren't these greats substitutes but its not so bad now.

Poor Red. And poor you Momma.

But check out these fun cookbooks!

You look so cute preggers! Can't wait to "meet" your little one!

Oh Dan. CORN? SOY? Are you seeing Chuck Greene? He's amazing. Allergies perplex me - I feel like there has to be some reason, right?? But for a grown up? I'm sorry - I know the transition will be hard. Praying for you and yours.

Hah - VAL: RM is very much allergic to milk, eggs & nuts... THIS test was for my poor hubby! So he's getting adult onset allergies. Thx for the cookbook suggestions!

I think Will asked them to put a 4 next to peas... JK. You poor thing. I don't know how you do it and we no longer will be able to have you over for dinner :) Ha ha (not being serious)

I'm with Lauren, the '4' next to the peas and beans is definitely in different handwriting. very suspicious. and what does a '3' mean next to histamine? aren't we all allergic to that? did you look at the bourbon ingredient list?

I think this is God leading you to open your own natural foods store in Gvle...Or start an allergy free cooking institute for new moms...or become a world-renowned expert on allergy awareness...or start a foundation providing grants to families who have kids with allergies (because it's so much more expensive to cook allergy free). There you go. Just pick one. :-)

Wow! That's crazy! I'm so sorry for you ALL! I guess one good thing is that your little one won't feel so left out of things! That's the hardest thing as they get older. He can commiserate with his daddy!

Maybe this Oma could cook some of those 'delicious' foods when she gets back in town. Lay 'em on me.
